SEMANGGI SUROBOYO: A LEGENDARY HEALTHY AUTHENTIC FOOD

When we are visiting one of place, we always want to know and search details about the place we’ve visited starting from history, culture, society. One thing that we never avoid is talking about local food. Why? Because local food is having its unique taste compared to modern or nowadays food. You won’t find the taste somewhere else. That’s why local food is being the main attraction for the food hunter when visiting new places.

Talking about local food, on this story, I will tell you guys about traditional local salad from Surabaya, my hometown, called Semanggi Suroboyo. “Semanggi Suroboyo” what is it actually? Well, semanggi Suroboyo is such kind of salad made from semanggi leaves, only available in Surabaya, served with peanut sauces. So, if you are curios about the look of semanggi suroboyo, let’s have a look.

semanggi-suroboyo

For the first time look, it’s almost same like pecel, Javanese veggie with peanut sauce. But the peanut sauce uses on semanggi is totally different. Because it’s added with cassava to make it thicker. You can add a sambal into it if you like spicy ones. I always put 2 or 3 spoon of sambal into the semanggi to make it taste better. For your information, nowadays to find this traditional Surabaya salad is little bit difficult. Not much sellers sell this food anymore. You can find it somewhere neat traditional market in Surabaya or you can go to Sunday car free day at taman Bungkul located on Jl. Darmo. There will one or two semanggi sellers there. And don’t forget about the cracker as complementary to make your semanggi suroboyo more delicious. The cracker uses for semanggi is called “Kerupuk Puli”. If the sellers are too kind, they will give you two or more for the cracker. Believe me, eating semanggi suroboyo without its cracker is not delicious.

The price for one portion of semanggi suroboyo now around IDR 6000 – IDR 8000. It’s not expensive you know compared to modern dishes you always purchase at mall or etc. And the important thing is it’s totally very healthy and perfect for those who are doing diet. For myself, I always eat 2 portion of semanggi suroboyo because one portion is not satisfied.

C’mon try semanggi suroboyo while you are visiting Surabaya, large city in East Java.

NASI JAGUNG: HEALTHY FOOD FOR HEALTHY PEOPLE

For your information, the staple food for Asian people is rice, so don’t be surprised especially for those coming from western if rice is consumed within breakfast is common thing. For Indonesia people, before consuming rice is not considered as a having meal even though they already eaten bread or kind of snacks. And what I want to present you about my favorite breakfast meal called nasi jagung or corn rice served with veggie and side dishes.

Nasi jagung is made of combination 15% white rice and 85% corn that has been smoothed. It is also accompanied with combination of veggie and side dishes such as fish, meat, or fried egg. This food is coming from small island in East Java called Madura. Actually, this food can be alternative how to process corn not only becoming pop corn or roasted corn but also kind of main meal especially for western people. Later, I will share about the recipe how to make delicious nasi jagung.  Nasi jagung is perfect for somebody who is looking healthy food especially for person with diabetic. Because the sweetness level of nasi jagung is below than white rice. And you can eat it everyday. I believed you will love it since first bite. Not only for breakfast but you can also eat it either lunch or dinner.

Nasi Jagung

You can see how delicious and healthy this nasi jagung. At first, it will look like nasi pecel or Javanese salad served with peanut sauce plus rice. But for nasi pecel is using white rice. And for nasi jagung, the veggie is not using peanut sauce but using spicy coconut powder or Madurese people called urap-urap. Or sometimes, the food seller is using jack-fruit coconut milk soup as the veggie. And one suggestion thing I wanna inform you, try to put sambal while eating nasi jagung because will make it better.

So, if you want to taste nasi jagung, I recommend you to come to East Java. For your information also, this traditional food is very cheap, around IDR 5000 – IDR 10000. So, come to East Java and enjoy this healthy food.

NASI LEMAK FEAT CRUNCHY CAT FISH (A PORTRAIT)

Nasi lemak, a word that always surrounding my mind when evening comes. Almost a week I spent my dinner time with this food. Don’t know why actually but I feel like I’m getting addicted to it. Probably because of taste of rice that makes my tongue wanna eat it again and again.

Basically, nasi lemak is same as traditional food from my country, Indonesia, called nasi uduk. Because the rice is cooked with coconut milk and several ingredients. And the side dishes, and sambal used are almost the same. However, in Indonesia version, the sambal used is spicier than Malaysia got. People of Malaysia do not like much spicy so the sambal for nasi lemak is little bit sweet from my view.

So how nasi lemak looks like? Well, I will show you this delicious this food. Yesterday, I purchased nasi lemak with cat fish as side dishes nearby my apartment in Kuala Lumpur.

You can see the rice is served with side dishes which is cat fish, fried penaut, sliced cucumber, and of course sambal. Sambal here plays the important role because crunchy fried cat fish required hot sauce to be eaten. I asked the seller to change the sambal with the spicy ones. Because for me, it’s not delicious while eating this food without spicy sambal.

And for the price, it depends on the what side dishes you asked. Let’s say for fried chicken only costs RM 6 – 7 while for cat fish only takes RM 5 – 6. But you can also ask not to give side dishes on your nasi lemak and usually it called nasi lemak biasa. And of course, the price will be cheaper then around RM 2 – 3.

NASI BEBEK: A LEGENDARY CULINARY FROM EAST JAVA

It’s been a long time since last time I posted on my blog. I don’t know in few weeks I didn’t get any interesting topics to write. I just tried to think what is new topic I need to write but no inspiration deal with me. But I don’t know suddenly I got idea how if I write something bout my favorite dishes which is nasi bebek.

For those of you who come from overseas, you will get a big question what it is, how it looks like?  Well, nasi bebek is kind of rice served with crunchy fried duck and spicy hot sambal. It’s as same as ayam penyet but it uses duck as main ingredient.

So how’s it look like?

That’s the look of my favorite dishes. A crunchy fried duck with unbelievable taste that I can’t describe served with spicy sambal. And of course with white rice. The key of delicious nasi bebek is located on the sambal itself according to myself but don’t know from others perspective. For me, sambal served for nasi bebek should be terribly spicy and acid. Why have to be that way? That’s a good question. Well, basically, the combination of spicy and acid inside sambal will increase your hungry taste and it’s perfect while eating nasi bebek.

Where I can try to taste this delicious food? For your information, the best place to hunting this food is at Surabaya. Why Surabaya? Surabaya is the birth place of this legendary food. You’d easily find in every corner people selling this food. Several famous nasi bebek sellers are found in this city such as:

  1. Nasi bebek Tugu Pahlawan located in front of Heroes monument
  2. Nasi bebek sayang anak located on Tanjung Torowitan nearby port of Tanjung Perak
  3. Nasi bebek Sinjay located on Kapas Krampung plaza, ahmad yani sidewalk shops, HR Muhammad
  4. Nasi bebek palupi located at Rungkut

Just for you know, those food stalls above believe me make your tongue feels good. For the price, it’s not expensive, just around IDR 20000 – IDR 25000. Better you start hunting this food while visiting East Java especially Surabaya.

TAHU GIMBAL: THE TASTY SWEET SPICY FOOD FROM SEMARANG

Bonjour or good morning all my dear fellow wordpress readers. Hopefully, you all are good and blessed. Today, I’d like to share my unexpected moment when taste first time Semarang traditional food called tahu gimbal. At first I never heard if there is any other traditional food beside lumpia in Semarang. Of course, you’d have question what this food is and how it looks like.

Tahu gimbal is traditional local food from Semarang which is made by tofu and several ingredients such as cabbage, fried egg, cucumber, sticky rice, and gimbal with sweet spicy peanut sauce. For myself, this food looks like traditional food from my hometown, Surabaya, called “tahu tek”. What makes this one different is the using of veggie inside and gimbal itself. Gimbal is kinda snack made of shrimp and rice flour.

Where can I buy this food in Semarang and how much the price of it? That’s another good questions. This traditional food is quite easy to find. You can find it in every restaurant or street food stalls. One famous tahu gimbal sellers is located at Taman KB exactly on Jln Menteri Soepeno. Tahu Gimbal Pak Edy is the name of the street food stall. The price of tahu gimbal around IDR 15000 – IDR 20000. Quite affordable actually, isn’t it?

The first impression on my first bite is I think I’m gonna love this food. And you know during my stay in Semarang for almost one month I’ve eaten 2 times tahu gimbal. The taste itself is like combination of salty, sweet, and spicy. If you ever tried tahu tek, the taste is similar. So if you are trying to find alternate local taste as you know central Java regions are very well-known with sweet taste, this food is recommended. Not too much expensive and gonna solve your hungry problem.

Last word is search, buy, and taste tahu gimbal. See you on my next review. Please follow my blog and gives comment.
